Position:Home>History> Was the civil war really about slavery? Or were there hiden motive like the Gulf

Question:There wasn't a "hidden" motive - but slavery wasn't the primary reason for it. As the other answerers have mentioned, states rights was the big issue. Many of the other states wanted it to be up to the individual state whether or not slavery would be legal or illegal in that state, while many of the northern states wanted it to be outlawed completely. Slavery was a secondary reason really. The power struggle between the states and the federal government was the primary reason.

We still have the same problem today actually - the federal government still wants to run our lives...we sure have issues in the USA...sighs...

the civil war was about states rights vs federal rights, slavery was just an issue that was part of it. the southern states wanted to keep slavery a state decided issue, and the northern states wanted to ban it federally.

It's nothing like the Gulf War, but slavery was not the only issue. States' rights were at the heart of the South's discontent. The South was for a less strong central government. They really saw themselves as being like the colonies fighting against the British--they felt the Federal government was favoring the north and taking far too much power.

Slavery was a part of all the other cause of the civil war

It was about many things, all of which had something to do with slavery. States rights, keeping the union together were a couple reasons.
What motives were hidden in the gulf war? That we were just there for the oil? There were no "hidden " motives.

Slavery was the primary reason for the Civil War. I wouldn't say it was the only reason, but the only other issue of any consequence was whether states had the right to secede.

The only "hidden motive" involved money.

Civil War was more about land issue (free state vs slave states, new states been created throu expansion), economy issue and goverment issue.(federal vs state govt) slavery was a cause but not the main one.
