Position:Home>History> King Henery V and his achievements? (urgent!)?

Question:Energetic and dynamic, Henry is perhaps best remembered for his victory at Agincourt, a chapter in his life immortalized in Shakespeare's play. His marriage to Catherine of Valois, daughter of the King of France, was designed to bring peace to the two nations that had been at war for more than 80 years; the couple's firstborn son was named as heir to the throne of France. Unfortunately, Henry V died while his son, Henry VI, was merely an infant, and the power struggle over control of the French throne led to renewed hostilities in the Hundred Years' War.

Henry V was one of the most significant English warrior kings of the Middle Ages. He lead England during the first decades of the 15th Century, and he successfully accomplished what his Plantagenet ancestors had been trying to do for centuries, uniting the thrones of France and England into one.

In England, Henry attempted to unify the Kingdom, which was still suffering from the civil wars known as the Wars of the Roses. Henry promoted the use of the English language in government, and was the first king to use English in his personal correspondence since the Norman conquest of 1066.

He was the commander of English forces at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, one the crucial principle battles of the Hundred Years War, and a decisive English victory. With the Treaty of Troyes of 1420, Henry successfully won victory over France. The treaty stipulated him as regent for King Charles VI "The Mad" of France, and heir to the French throne. Henry also married the Charles' daughter, Katherine of Valois, to secure his claim to the French throne.

Henry spent his remaining years subjugating rebel French barons. He fell ill from dysentery shortly after laying siege to the city of Meaux in the Summer of 1422. He died near Paris on 31 August. Because he died before he could secure his possessions in France, his infant son and heir, Henry VI, lost his claim to the French throne when it was seized by Charles VII, son of Charles VI of France.

Hope this helps,
Peace.

Herny V led the English army in several succesful battles against the French during the latter part of the Hundred years War, one of the most brutal and horrific episodes in english history. The barbarity of th eEnglish in France during this period is truly shocking. henry V had succesful victories at Harfleur and Agincourt, and starved the people of Rouen into submission during a prolonged seige. When he defeated th epeople of Caen after a long seige,, the inhabitants of the city - men, women, and children - were herded into the market place and butchered, at least 2,000 people. He married Katherine, daughter of the King of France, in the hope of uniting France and england under his rule, but died not long afterwards, leaving his baby son Henry VI as King of england.

henry V was glorified by Shakespeare in his play of the same name, but he was an utterly ruthless man, without any tinge of compassion. A French writer, describing the English invaders, said:

"The war they have waged and still wage is false, treacherous and damnable, but then they are an accursed race, opposed to all good and all reason, ravening wolves, proud, arrogant, hypocrites, tricksters without any conscience, tyrants, and persecutors of Christians, men who drink and gorge on human blood, with natures like birds of prey, people who live only by plunder."
