Florence is often considered the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance and was long ruled by the Medici family. The Renaissance spanned the period from the end of the 14th century to about 1600, marking the transition between Medieval and Early Modern Europe.

Under the rule and patronage of the Medici family, Florence became the center of Renaissance art, thought, writing, and style. Many of the most famous individuals of the Renaissance were from, or lived in Florence at some time: Leonardo da Vinci, Dante Alighieri, Galileo Galilei, Sandro Botticelli, Michaelangelo, Filippo Brunelleschi, and Donatello are just a few.

The Medici were great political patrons, and encouraged Italy's wealthy to send their children to be educated in Florence. This brought the city of Florence important an influential political ties throughout Italy. Three of the Medici family's sons became Popes: Leo X, Clement VII, and Leo XI. The Medici also married many of their daughters into the Royal Houses of France, Spain, and Naples, bringing the family even more power.

Hope all this helps,
Peace!
