Position:Home>History> Was The Assassination Of Abraham Lincoln In April 1865 A Conspiracy?

Question:Yes. Booth and his entourage were to simultaneously kill Lincoln and members of his cabinet. As these answers say. Off the top of my head I do not know but it had to be done at the exact same time for it to work.

One guy was stabbed repeatedly but his large pajama shirt concealed his small size. Booth thought he would go down in history but to his surprise the South condemned his action.

It was primarily the work of one man but there were others who had weak ties to what JWB did.

Yes, but it wasn't a wide-reaching or even terribly competent one.

It depends on what you mean by conspiracy. There was a plot by a handfull of confederates to assinate Lincoln along with his vice president and most of his cabinet. The ony one who followed through with the plan was booth. So was it the Federals who conspired to kill Lincoln (as your classic JFK conspiracy would have it)? Absolutely not. Was it a conspiracy though? Technically, yes.

yes it was a conspiracy.. There were 2 other people with Booth. Booth's job was to kill Linclon, the second assassin's job was to Assassinate The Secretary of State and the third assisan was supposed to kill the vice pres (johnson)

IF this plan worked the Union would be crippled and the Confedracy could mobolize to fight the union again...

only booth suceeded. one assisan got drunk and the other tried to shoot the Seceratary of state but his gun jammed. The scecratary of sate and the assisan fought till the cops came and arrested the assasin.

How do I know this U Ask??
I watched this on the history Channel.

Clearly Lewis Paine and David Herrold were involved as well, and Booth had met with the others, particularly related to the kidnapping plot, which was made irrelevant by Lee's surrender at Appomattox. The only one we can be fairly sure wasn't involved was Mary Surratt, as one of the convicted plotters announced from the gallows that Mrs. Surratt was innocent, though she also met her death at a rope's end that day. About all Mrs. Surratt appears to have done is allow the conspirators to meet at her boarding house.

The speculation about the involvement of the Confederate Secret Service is pretty much just speculation. There was a show on the History Channel recently about the Lincoln Conspiracy and the evidence presented by the proponents of this argument was very thin.

Mainly it was the work of one man , John Wilkes Booth but he did have accomplices because 4 were hanged in July of 1865 for their involvement in the Lincoln assassination and there were others who were sentenced to prison and a few who fled like John Surratt but later he was pardoned.
