Laws of Nature are the prime ideas of the Enlightenment during this time. This in turn led to the idea of abolishment of torture.
The people you want to look up for your project are John Locke, Ceasare Beccaria (for crime and punishment), Montesquieu and possibly Voltaire. Use Wikipedia or google them. I found some good information for my assignment on them.
