Believe it or not, not that far back (in time)!. As to generations, it depends upon your family tree!. On my tree, the average generation is 30 years for females, 40 for males!.
I have searched for ancestors by web, by book, by periodicals (such as the Mayflower Descendants), taken a DNA test, and read a number of books by leading genealogists!.
In his book, “Mapping Human History: Discovering the Past Through Our Genes” by Steve Olson, Mr!. Olson claims that every one alive on earth today are descended from Nefertiti, Confucius, and Julius Caesar (through his paramour, as Julia died giving birth)!.
Some will say that this is unproven (true) or not possible (it is)!.
By the time you go back 34 generations, it would have taken more persons to produce you than are alive today!. World population didn't reach 1 Billion until the 1800s! In otherwords, your ancestors (mine and everyone else's) married ancestors!. Or, to put it another way, there was significan intermarriage!
Anthropologists generally accept 800 A!.D!. as being the date when native Hawaiians settled on the Islands, the last such place on earth to be settled!.
In other words, anthropologically and mathematically it is entirely within the realm of possibility than a common ancestor for everyone alive on earth today is no further back in time than Julius Caesar!.
Another point: my DNA reveals that I have ancestors from every (modern-day) country in Europe (proven by the papertrail), the Middle East, Asia, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, islands world-wide!.!.!. and North, Central, and South America, including various tribes, Eskimos, Innuits, Saami, and so many more!.
In other words, while they can claim it is "unproven", the circumstancial evidence is that it is so!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

If you are in the USA, not Asian and the modern person is Asian, (or, pick any race you are not) back to when Homo Saiens walked out of africa, 20,000 - 40,000 years ago!. At 25 years per generation, that is 800 - 1!.600 generations!.

Just to pick one, Japan was isolated until 1854!. Except for Hawaii, people who were not Japanese rarely married people who were, until after WWII!. Norwegians don't marry Argentines or Cherokees that often either!. There are 100 million people in Japan!. The chance of you being related to any of them (Again, if you are not Japanese) is slim!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You can go back 5 generations and possibly find an ancestor in common!. You can go back 50 and not find any common ancestor!. In other words!.!. you are working on the assumption that ALL PERSONS come from SOME ancestor in common, which is simply unproven!.
Strictly speaking, genealogy is based in finding some reliable record saying that so and so is the father (son, sibling) of another person!. In fact, people were around, long before any records were kept!. So!.!.!. John and Jim COULD be brothers, but there is no guarantee that you will ever find some means to verify it!.
The Bible states we all descend from Adam and Eve!. With no disrespect meant to anyone's spiritual thinking!.!. in genealogy thinking, this is unprovable!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
