The Latin phrase "victrix patientia duris" means "patience is victorious in hardship!." The idea is that people who can endure hard times will do much better than those who don't!. An example: a politician who endures criticism instead of dropping out of the race in embarrassment has a better chance of succeeding in politics!.

This motto is most famously used with the arms of the Carters of the Castle Martin estate, County Kildare, Ireland!. There is no such thing as a surname family crest, and there are many families of the same name with different arms!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You should REALLY do your research before getting that tattoo!. Believing your family has a family crest is like believing that fellow in the Nigerian Oil Ministry is gong to split $14,000,000 (fourteen MILLION) with you!.

I knew a guy at my church, who has since passed on, who had a small version of the 101st Airborne Division patch tattooed on his arm!. He'd jumped into Normandy as a scared 20-year old in 1944!.

I have a small traditional tattoo from the Ibans, a tribe of people in Borneo!. Most of the students I had as a Peace Corps Volunteer were Iban!. I spent many a happy weekend visiting students' parents, drinking home-made beer and eating roast wild pig!.

Both of those tattoos meant something!. If you get a copy of the coat of arms, just the crest or just the motto from someone who shared your surname but who probably has no other relation to you, it won't mean much except you believed a coffee mug and t-shirt merchant who told you it was your "family" coat of arms!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
