This is what I found:

1920 Census, Pensacola, Escambia County, Florida
Sanders Courtney, b!. 1862 Washington
Both parents were born in Florida
Wife is: Subra, born 1872 in Alabama

1930 Census, Washington, Escambia County, Florida
Ezequiel S!. Courtney, b!. 1862 Florida
Wife is: Satie, born 1872 in Alabama

He is also listed as E!.S!. Courtney in a state census!.

There children were: Queen, Annie, Rosa B!., Katherine, Otis and Billie!.

The first thing that comes to mind is in the Census of 1920 where is lists his birthplace as Washington is in error!. I believe that it should be Washington County, Florida!.

Second, I have a strong feeling that his parents were John H!. Courtney and Martha E!. - although I have no documentation to support this!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

1920 United States Federal Census original view shows Sanders birthplace as WASHINGTON, and parents' birthplace as FLORIDA!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Sander's parents' birth place is not listed on the 1880 census in a way that seems like he didn't know where they were born!. There were several other people on the page listed as orphans and adopted, but the list seems to be for a rooming house!.

While this family DOES NOT match what we know about Sander's family except for the surname, it is interesting that they were living in Washington county, Florida, in 1860!. This could be a clue for the 1920 census saying Sanders was born in Washington!.
