Question: Question about my roots!?
At around 1905-1918, my great-grandmother came from Ialty to Honduras where she met my great-grandfather!. They then moved to America and started a whole new life!. My question is; is there anyway that before she went to Honduras, could she have stopped in Brazil!? I know the two aren't really near each other, but I'm part Brazilian and never understood why!. My great-grandma would just say she came to Brazil first and settled there!. What would be a reason she stopped here!? Did other factors come into play(ExWar, Poverty, Government)!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Brazil was in need of laborers after the abolishment of slavery in 1888 so the Brazilian government and landowners attracted Italians and other Europeans by spreading posters promoting the idea of becoming rich from the coffee plantations, transportation was provided and to be repaid over time Italy was going through an economic crisis at the time and over 1 million Italians immigrated between 1880 -1920!.

As it turned out, many were treated as indentured servants working in the same conditions in which slaves were!. This caused rebellions and revolts between the labourers and the landowners and many left for America or Argentina as soon as they could but after a few years those who stayed became established in their own colonies and prospered well!. It is estimated today that over 25 million Brazilians are of Italian descent!. There have been DNA studies done showing a large percentage of European genes in the south, and the northern part consisting mostly of Portuguese mixed with African and Indian heritageWww@QuestionHome@Com
