Question: Any resources for family history of printing workers (UK)!?
My grandfather was a printer and so was my great-grandfather (1830-1901)!. I have heard it was often carried on from father to son, so are there any resources specifically printer-related, which might help me to get back further!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

I would suggest that you look at the local operation of your Great Grandfather's activity and search for guild and craftsman organizations related to the printing industry in that specific town!.

I am a printer; and none of my ancestors were printers!. My grandfather was an electrician, my British great-grandfather was involved in textiles, (as was most of his family), his father was a shoemaker, and my GGGrandfather was a farmer!. The 19th century in England lead to a lot of mobility in trades which previously was impossible!.

Your great-grandfather could very well have done an entirely different occupation!. Printing was an exploding technology in the 19th Century as it became mechanized; it had to draw new recruits from somewhere!. Younger sons often took on new occupations!.

My experience is that printers don't keep good records, they just publish the records of others!. Fortunately, my family had a lot of ministers who wrote the records!. I'm not UK; let your question roll until the UK Yamsters come out: there are tons of occupational records on your side of the pond that may help!. Good luck and happy hunting!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
