Introduced by the Dutch in1640, the sugar plantation system in Caribbean islands attracted to the potential colonisers, The Island economies bases on small farms producing cash crops of cotton and tobacco were changed into large plantations requiring large labour forces!. The abolition of slavery by the British Parliament in 1834 and ban on slave trade necessitated the import of indentured labour to work on plantations!.(indentured labour means - the labour who had entered in to written agreement with their masters)!. The arrived mainly from India and China between 1838 - 1017 when the indentured system was abolished nearly 5 lacs East Indians from U!.P and Bihar immigrated to theCaribbeann islands!. These Asian indentured labourers were treated as African slaves whom they had partially replaced in the fields and factories!. These new immigrants added to the different nationalities that made up the ruralisticCaribbeann society!.
