This website gives you access to the original certificates for births, marriages and deaths and also the original church entries, so it is worth the money! also try looking on the LDS website - www!.familysearch!.org, its free but is VERY hit and miss, you might find him listed on it / you might not, but its worth a look anyhow!. Edit: Now that I know what you have already done - have you also tried the Borders Family History Society at www!.bordersfhs!.org!.uk!? And what about posting requests for info on genforum!.genealogy!.com or www!.scotsorigins!.com!? It may well be that your William Fleming has his year and/or place of birth wrong - and that is quite a common finding (I have been doing family history as a hobby for 10 years and have found this to be a common error) OR he may not have been Christened OR he may have been Christened in a totally different area to the one he was born in!. If Scotlandspeople don't have his Christening register then it's highly likely that you won't find one, but not impossible!. What about any siblings do you know if he had any, if so, try tracing through them instead!. Strathaven is in the Avon Valley, Lanarkshire - hence the listing of Avondale (it's the registration district) and not the townland of Strathaven!.
