The only way it would be your coat of arms is if you inherited from your father and he inherited it from his father and so on back down the line, or if you had one designed yourself!. In that case you would know what the W meant!. Peddlers who sell coats of arms(misnomer family crest) on the internet, at shopping malls, in airports, in magazines or solicit by mail sell them like they belong to everyone with a particular surname and they don't!. If what you have is a valid coat of arms, it belongs to one man and one man alone!. Genealogist are contemptuous of the surname product businesses as they mislead people about their family history!. If there was a family history along with the coat of arms, the history might be yours and it might not!. You would need to know the original armiger and the blazon (description) to begin your class assignment!. On the one hand, if the arms are indeed yours, then you would have researched your male line back to someone who used the arms and thus could provide more information for us to go on!.
