It in incorrect to ASSUME that all persons with any name are related!.!. with a rare name, it is sometimes possible!.
Persons that are related, are!.!. well, related!. The only way to confirm a relationship is using valid records (which is what genealogy/ research does)!.
IF grandpa was born prior to 1930, he should be in the census (if you are US)!.!. in the UK, the 1901 census is the most recent one open!. Records between those dates and now, would be birth/death certs, or other types of records!. Your first step would be to confirm the exact name of his mother, and work from that to find who her parents/siblings would be!. What you say, normally indicates a possible out of wedlock birth, but you need the record to verify this!.
Searching for surname histories is pretty much shot in the dark, and not reliable!. Go for the accurate records to show his provable ancestry, and build on that!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

Sounds like a derivation of Jamieson!.

Many anglicisations of scottish names were made during times when not everyone wrote and names had to be transcribed hence small changes were introduced in spellings!. eg St Clair became Sinclair!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
