Yes!. You actually have answered your own question!. He is now gone, and would not get serious with you!. What is there to stop you!? You could have done it while he was still here and not told him about it!. You are doing this for yourself!. Have fun and enjoy it!. I hope you can find everything you are looking for!. I have hit the old brick wall and it is frustrating!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes!.!. you will have more satisfaction to find facts!.
My mother came from a poverty stricken area (Polish immigrants to Chicago) and was estranged from her family for many years!. It was not until I did the research that I found out !.!. she was the baby of my grandfathers 2nd family, and only 1yr old when he died, from a fall from a building!. My grandmother couldn't raise them!.!. so she and her siblings spent part of their lives in an orphanage!.
I have also found a huge tendency that persons who went through the Depression in the 30s, often tried to shut out bad memories of hard times!.
When you learn these things!.!. you have more compassion for failings!.!.and sometimes a greater appreciation for what you have today!.
Go for it!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

We all want to know where we came from; that's why genealogy has become such a popular pastime!.
In your father's case, it sounds like he wasn't comfortable with you knowing about his family background!. You need to decide what is more important to you: finding out about your roots or respecting your father's unspoken wish to leave it alone!.
That said, I would still encourage you to look into it!. My family told me a lot of myths about my grandparents!. It took a lot of research, but I dug into our family's past!. What I found wasn't always pretty, but it made my ancestors more real to me when I saw that they were human beings that made mistakes just like me!. Somehow that makes me feel closer to them!. (You would want to be careful if you share what you find with members of your family -- some of them might not be happy to have family myths shattered!.)
Another thing that drove me to pursue my family's history is the thought that some of the information that I have uncovered might have been lost to my family forever!. I think of genealogy not only as satisfying my own curiosity, but also as a gift for future generations!.

Good luck, and if you do decide to pursue your family's past I have to warn you that it's extremely addictive!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes research your family you will have lots of fun, But I would still write down all the stories he told you just so you can look back on them and smile and you can pass them on, and there might just might be a grain of truth in the tales he told!.
