Personally I wouldn't ever change my name officially!. It's a lot of hassle and is it really that important!.!.!.!? Unless you have a name that you really, really hate then don't bother!. You can always just start using the name Nicki with friends and meeting new people but keep your real name for use on official documents and that sort of thing!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

You can just change to any name you like for common usage - my name as you've probably gathered is Veronica, but everyone calls me Roni; many don't even know why!
I had a friend called Isabel at school, whom everybody calls Lyn because she preferred that short version of her second name; again, she only uses the name given to her by her mother on official occasions (such as signing cheques)!.
So - stick with your parents' chosen name because it is so much hassle to change it apart from anything else!.
Start by signing your Christmas cards as "love from Nikki (aka Florence Smith)" people will start to respond without any need for you to do it formally!.
When meeting new people, you can say "My given name is Florence, but everybody calls me Nikki"Www@QuestionHome@Com
