It's not always easy to prove Native American Ancestry because births were not always registered and some people were ashamed of "Indian Blood" so they tried to hide it!.

That being said if you know where and when she lived, Look for a census that might have included her!. For many years it was not considered racist to ask for Ethnicity on the census form!.

If by chance she was Baptised, the Catholic Church and I'm sure many other churches kept hand written records!. My G!. Grandmother's Baptismal Certificate states that she was presented by her parents, "who were savages"!.

Cindi's list has lots of links for Native American research!. I suggest you leave queries giving as much information as you can!. It took my over a year but I found my proof and even connected with several distant cousins who were very interested in sharing research!.

Good Luck!Www@QuestionHome@Com

If I may start with a copy and paste of Chris' answer here and just add that there are a lot of red flags for a genealogist when we hear "looks like" (there's no such thing really) and "I heard" (unreliable, many people have untrue family legends)!. Both of these things tend to color our research so we look for what we want to find!. With research it's important to set these things aside and look at cold hard evidence!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

There is an Ester Courtney 22 white, school teacher born VA, parents born VA!. in King and Queen Co!., VA!. in the 1930 census!. At Genforum I found a mention of Esther Lucille Courtney married to Lyda Percy Byrd!. There are Byrds in King & Queen Co!. One family living near Burt or Byrd S!. Courtney!.

If the Ester I found is yours the listing as white probably doesn't mean much!. Without your dates and locations I couldn't be sure if the Ester I found was yours!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
