There is no such thing as a family crest!. A crest is part of a coat of arms!. Poland and France are probably the only 2 countries in Europe where a family will have a coat of arms!. However, only dynastic families have them!. In other countries they belong to an individual man!.

The Irish O means descendant of!. Mac, Mc and Fitz means son of!. So, if a person's name is O'Connor does that mean everyone is a descendant of the same Connor, or could there have been more than one Connor that had descendants!.

Not all Irish have coats of arms!. There are clan arms but what the peddlers on the internet, in shopping malls, in airports, in magazines, at fairs sell are not to be trusted!. They sell them like they belong to everyone with a particular surname and they don't!.

If you know of anyone that has one of those little walnut plaques with a coat of arms on it along with a family history, if it is a valid coat of arms, it probably belongs to someone else that is not related to them at all!. also, the family history that comes with them might be their family history and it might not!.

People in Europe did not have surnames until the last millennium!. In the Netherlands they took surnames during the reign of Napoleon!. In England most had one by the end of the 14th century!. They were based on a)being the son of someone b)their occupation c)where they lived d)some characteristic about them!. When they got through, it wasn't impossible for legitimate sons of the same man to have a different surname and still each could have shared their surname with others not in their family!. Some say we are all related if we go back far enough!. However, the root person of your surname might not be the same as the root person of someone else with your surname!.

See the links below, one from the British College of Arms, the most authoritative source there is!. One regarding Irish heraldry and another regarding Italian heraldry!. Another is from the most prestigious genealogical organization in the U!. S!., The National Genealogical Society!. This will give you an overview of the phoniness involved in these merchants of deceit!. Another name for them are bucket shops!.

I apologize if you aren't!. It is just that we get so many students who have nitwit teachers giving them projects like this!. If they are going to have kids to do their family history, they should know more about genealogy!. Feel free to print off what I have posted here and give it to him/her even if you have to do it when he/she is away from his/her desk!.

I couldn't have answered this any better than Shirley Y did, with the exception to capitalize that "families DON'T have crests" - Individuals do!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Polish families have crests, IF they are aristocratic! Poles of peasant origin don't have them!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
