Question: Another genealogy curiosity!?
I'll have to ask my mother because I'm not sure exactly what last name it was!.!.!. it was either SteinMAN, or SteinBERG!.!.!.
what nationality would either of these names be, other than German!?
Another family name!.
Is anyone familiar with this last name, that is Steinman, or Steinberg!?
What does it mean if it has the prefix "von" or "van" in front of it
ie, Van Steinman, or Van Steinberg!? What nationality does that denote!?

Thanks! :)Www@QuestionHome@Com

Hi!.

Steinman just with one "n" at the end instead of double "n", (Steinmann), may belong to a german-jewish family!.

Steinberg could be also german-jewish but it depends!. To know that you should ask to your relatives!.

Talking about the "von" and "van", I believe they mean "of"!.

Like for example: "Gustav Von Boch" could be, lets say, understood as Gustav of Boch, this is for german!. In duch surnames you change "von" for "van"!.

The english surnames do not have a similar example!. wereas Spanish, Portugese and French surnames do:

De Silva (Spanish) Da Silva (portuguese), De León (Spanish) de la Croix (french), and so on!.!.!.!.
