It's an occupational surname for someone who cuts cloth for tailors; from the Middle Low German "schrader" or "schroder," meaning tailor
or the German verb "schroten," meaning to cut!.

Unrelated families would have chosen it as their surname and there isn't a "typical" location it would have come from!.

Varations: SCHRODER, SCHRADER!. If the surnames had with 2 dots over the first vowel, they would usually be changed in English to SCHROEDER, SCHRAEDER Www@QuestionHome@Com
