Question: Where do I start with my family tree!?
I am new to the family tree thing!. Im searching Brocklehurst's!. I have managed to get all the info I possibly can out of my father, but I havent got anywhere!. I don't know where to start

Father - Eric Keith Brocklehurst (1954-present)
Grandfather - Eric Brocklehurst (1932-2000)
Great Grandfather - Fredrick (unsure of spelling)

I have come to a dead end at my GGrandfather and I don't know what to do now!. I litterally don't know anything about him apart from my dad thinks he married a Clifton and that he was a coal miner!. Most of the Brocklehurst (inc!. grandad) were born in the Derbyshire or surrounding areas but he may have been born different!. HELLLLLP, lol!

Look on freebmd ,and it shows that Eric's birth in 1932 had a Mother's Maiden name of Clifton!. Searching for Brocklehurst/Clifton births they start ~1914!.(Rotherham)

I think the mother's name was possibly Dorothy!. CLICK LINK and CLICK AGAIN!

1901 has a 7-y-old Dorothy Clifton in Sheffield (Nether Hallam) who would still be having kids in 1832!.!.
Too many Freds around to be sure of picking a good-un although there is a 6-y-old in sheffield!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You should start by asking all your living relatives about family history!. Then, armed with that information, you can go to your public library and check to see if it has a genealogy department!. Most do nowadays; also, don't forget to check at community colleges, universities, etc!. Our public library has both www!.ancestry!.com and www!.heritagequest!.com free for anyone to use (no library card required)!.
Another place to check out is any of the Mormon's Family History Centers!. They allow people to search for their family history (and, NO, they don't try to convert you)!.
A third option is one of the following websites:

Cyndi's has the most links to genealogy websites, whether ship's passenger lists, ancestors from Africa, ancestors from the Philippines, where ever and whatever!.

Of course, you may be successful by googling: "john doe, born 1620, plimouth, massachusetts" as an example!.

Good luck and have fun!

Then there is the DNA test; if you decide you want to REALLY know where your ancestors came from opt for the DNA test!. Besides all the mistakes that officials commonly make, from 10% to 20% of birth certificates list the father wrong; that is, mama was doing the hanky-panky and someone else was the REAL father!. That won't show up on the internet or in books; it WILL show up in DNA!.
I used www!.familytreedna!.com which works with the National Geographics Genotype Program!.

There are so many websites devoted to genealogy; just google genealogy and see how many hits you get! You can even google "free genealogy sites" and get so many hits!. Don't forget to type in "smith family genealogy" (whatever surnames for your dad and mom, grandparents, etc!.), "webster county genealogy society", "kentucky genealogy society", etc!.
AND check Yahoo! genealogy answers, especially the top 10!. Just click on their profiles!.

As for putting it down on paper or into a genealogy program (not recommended! If it crashes, everything is lost!), you either start with yourself, OR, with your parents and work backwards! Your parents, then your grandparents, then your great-grandparents!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

and

www!.family search!.org

They are both free but are not complete

If you can be a bit more specific about where your great grandfather lived, when he was born and what he did for a living I can look him up on ancestry for you!. starting with the 1901 census to start you off!.

also you should phone all your living grand parents, uncle and aunts and see what they can tell you!. Someone may have a family bible or have already started researching your family history!.

It can be very interesting!. So far I have managed to trace my family back to about 1670!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
