Are you in the UK!? If so, e-mail me with details (link is in my profile), and I'll see if I can find her for you!.

I traced mine years ago!. The first thing to do is if you know your birth name you can go the births, deaths and marriages and get your birth certificate with your original name on, that will give you your mothers name!. You might have to go via social services to prove you are not going to ruin someone elses life!. However if you were born after 1975 this rule might not apply, I think the law changed!. Once you have the name there are various ways to go!. First you can do a search at the births, deaths and marriages register by literally going through all the records from your birth time onwards or getting a professional to do it for you!. You look for a marriage or even other siblings born and of course deaths related to your mothers name!. I found grandparents, aunts, uncles and siblings!. There is also a register for parents who have given up their children who would like to be contacted !.!.!. not sure where you find it but I know it exists!. Right from there you have a starting point and can start going through the polling registers in the area you were born which should give you more direction!. From that you can sometimes get addresses and telephone numbers, if not of your genetic mother but quite often of other family members and then that is just a call to find out if they have any knowledge of her !.!.!.!. be careful with this - you might have to get someone else to make the call and pretend to be a lawyer, to get the answers you want!.

I have to say it is a long process for some !.!.!. be sure you want to do this!. It took me 2 years to find my genetic parents and after all that searching, although they were glad I had found them I have had little or no real contact since!. I do however have a full medical history, which is a major bonus!. Others I know have been disappointed and even rejected!. So think carefully!.

Good luck with your search and I hope you have a very happy outcome, however don't hold your hopes up for the happy ever after result - you after all don't know why you were necessarily given away!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Are you adopted!? Any action you take should depend on whether you are, or whether your birth mother just left home!.
If you are adopted, the register previously mentioned is kept by the General Registar Office!. Go to www!.gro!.gov!.uk/gro/content!. Any contact depends on both parties registering!.
Alternatively, you can try the Social Services department who arranged the adoption, or that were involved in making arrangements for your care!.
You say no-one in the family will talk about her!. So I guess she may just have left home, and that you are still with the rest of your birth family!. You can go to one of the bigger libraries that has free access to Ancestry UK, and look at births, marriages, and deaths!. You can see some of it after 1984 on www!.freebmd, but you have to subscribe to get the detailed information you want!. You could also try www!.192!.com!. for Electoral Roll information, but people can opt out of having their details on the public domain!. Of course, she may have remarried, and changed her name!. You can see the indices free, but have to pay £10 + VAT to get 5 credits for addresses!.
As your family is being so negative, there may be a good reason for that!. I don't want to be a spoilsport, but supposing she doesn't want contact!? Perhaps you should get counselling before you start!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

do you know what skwl she went to!? and what year she left
maybe you could track down people from her skwl leaving year on friends reunited and ask on there if any of them know of her whereabouts!?

ask citizens advice bureau
