I was also adopted and my birth mother handed me over to my adoptive mother, when I was old enough mum told me that I was adopted and the whole story, but she had burnt my original birth certificate in case I found it, I was told her name and a bit about her but when I applied for my full birth certificate they gave me one with gaping holes in it and only my adoptive parents names, apparently here in australia you have to go to social services explain why you want to contact your birth mother like illness etc!., my mum had no problems with me wanting to look but I was the one who was uninterested in finding her, the mum who raised me is my mother in every sense of the word and even though both my parents have passed on I still have not looked for her, but thats just my personal decision!. Don't be afraid of asking your adoptive parents, they all know that one day you will ask questions and are more than likely prepared for the day that you do ask, just because you want to know where you really came from does not mean that you love your parents any less and they know that, so go ahead and ask, goodluck to you! :)Www@QuestionHome@Com

The place to start is actually the adoption agency that you came through!. Likely, you'll need to wait until you are 18, but many adoptions carry a clause where information can be released when you are 18 if you and your birth parents permitt it!. I would also be careful who you decide are your "real" parents!. Remember that the people who gave you up are likely not still together and may not have had the easiest lives!. There's a good chance that they won't be in contact with each other!. They also have very likely started families of their own, now and it might be uncomfortable or sad for you to see that!.

I'm not saying that you shouldn't look for them, just that many times it doesn't turn out to have the fairy tail ending that people hope for!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You should have told us which country you live in and which country your birth parents are in!. The laws relating to this vary from country to country and state to state in some countries!.

As Barbara B said it is quite simple in Australia!. You put your name forward when you are 18 years old and if your birth parents wish to have a meeting with you then you can meet them!. The state government department handling this in New South Wales where I live - Community Services and Social Security - will be only too pleased to help you reconnect if you want too and so do the natural parents!. The wish has to be mutual!.

I would encourage you to discuss this with your adoptive parents!. There is something seriously wrong if they cannot accept that one day you would want to meet your natural parents!. There shouldn't be a need to get a private detective!. Anyway how would you pay for one at 17 year of age!.

also if you were adopted from an adoption agency in Asia which I doubt that you were or in the case of the USA one in Latin America then you will have to ask your adoptive parents to give you information about going into the foreign country of origin in order to gain access to your natural parents!. this is more complex as a lot of people do not want to reconnect unless constant contact has been kept up over the years!. Some adoptive parents do make a contribution to the wellbeing of the village or community that their adoptive child has come from in the case of Australian parents adopting from China and other Asian countries!.
