Question: Genealogy people - Little help with a family tree!?
How do you list people who have been divorced, and have children with a new spouse!? I'm, using "family tree maker" and not having much luck adding special circumstances!. For example, I'm married to a man who is not my daughters father!. When it asks for my husbands name, it automatically puts him in as the father!. also, I have an uncle who's wife died, and later, he married someone else who has children, so how can I add his second wife!? And are those children included, or is it only bloodlines!?

I'm new to this, and I'm just getting started, so I'm looking for something that will help me organize all of the info that I have (and still working on getting) before I really get too deep into it!. I know its going to take me about 10 years!.

Is there a better program out there for my circumstances!?

It's not a horrible problem, but I have FTM16 and it's different from 2008 & 2009!.

Basically, however, you can control all sorts of relationships!. If your version works the way mine does:

Add the other spouse to your spouse, and the children that resulted!. This can generally be done in the Family View screen!. Notes can take care of weird explanations!.

If you go up to "People," you'll find you can do lots of interesting work here!. Slide down the menu to "edit marriage," and look at the slider in the Relationship section!. It will generally say married, but if you hit the down arrow, you'll see options to define the relationship as Friends, Married, Private, Partners, Single and Unknown!.

Look for such options!. They solve many problems!. For all else, there's the almighty "Notes!."

The "People" menu will also let you detach kids from the wrong spouse!.
The automatic surname function is only an aid, you can over-write the name as you wish!.

You will want to try to keep to genetic bloodlines whenever possible!. If you are uncertain, you can always create a new spouse and attach them to the correct parents later!.

It is a fairly robust program, and I've found that with a little looking I can do most of what I need!.

Best of luck to you!. Learning new software can be mind-boggling, but generally, FTM can handle most of these situations if you explore enough!. E-mail me if you wish, it's good to confront these little challenges with others, and it benefits both parties!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
