Managing archaeological sites is not always as straightforward as some people might assume!.

The Wincobank site is a scheduled monument and therefore protected under the 1979 Ancient Monuments and Scheduled Areas Act!. What this means is that you can't dig any of it up without Scheduled Monument Consent which you have to apply to English Heritage for!. Just because the site is scheduled does not mean it is owned by English Heritage!. It is protected by them but not necessarily owned!.

I've looked the site up and it is not owned by English Heritage, it is owned by Sheffield Council!.

Now onto how to manage the site :)

First of all a management plan would need to be put in place to deal with scrub and trees on the site!. Scrub will obscure the ramparts of the hillfort from view and as it was created to be visible this is clearly detracting from the purpose of the monument!. Trees can cause problems when they are old and likely to fall over or unstable enough that they will be windblown!. When this happens they create rather large holes which are very damaging to the monument!. A suitable programme of managing the trees, cutting down those that pose a threat to the monument and recommending that planting of new trees does not take place would be good!. There is a hillfort near me where work is currently going on to thin the trees out a bit!.

Bins are a good idea but if you're going to need to secure them in the ground you probably will need to apply for scheduled monument consent!. Do not be put off by this as English Heritage do grant consent for works like this from time to time, particularly if you can argue the benefit!. Its worth putting it in your homework and citing that you realise permission will need to be sought etc, I think that would show a lot of knowledge!

How about information panels!? That would be a great way to improve the site if there are none already there!. We want to encourage people to visit and learn about the monument!. If they already have them are they up to date or do they look old and tatty and need replacing!?

What about access to the site!? On Hadrians Wall they were finding that lots of people were visiting the same spots and causing a lot of erosion so they tried to find ways of spreading the impact!. What are the paths like around the monument!? Are they just tracks so people are causing damage to the monument by continually using them!? Should some sort of surface be put on them to protect the monument from further erosion and is so what would be suitable and in keeping with the monument!?

I'm hoping I've given you a few ideas here to help you with your assignment!. If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to contact me through my profile!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
