Anythings that I should avioid!? I've seen several onlines services that will send you a DNA kit to swab your mouth and send it back to them!. Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: I like FamilytreeDNA the best as it has a huge database of results to compare!. The Y-DNA would be for your male line!. The MTDna would be for your female line, from you to your mother to her mother, etc!. Depending on what you would like to find out you can do the Y-DNA first and then upgrade later for the female line!. I'd do at least 24 markers on the male side as with 12 you get that you are related to everyone, with more markers tested you can narrow down your line to match other lines!. Make sure if you use FamilyTreeDNA that you put in your last name and join that project to get the discount price!. Not only will you get your results, you will get notified when there are matches!. After you get your results you can upload them to Ysearch to compare our results to that database too!. If you're African America and trying to trace your roots back to a region in Africa , it's especially a bad ideal!. The best way to trace your roots is to do it on your own and try to compare DNA with people you find in the mother country who may be a distant cousin!.!.!. which leaves a lot of Black Americans out of luck since White slavers typically didn't keep genealogy records of their "property"!. Www@QuestionHome@Com Below is my answer to a similar question, but add that your ethnic background does not make anything more difficult or complicated, I guess that, as Ali, you are a male, so you can have your Ydna tested which will show your male line, your father-grandfather-greatgrandfather-and so on, and/or you can have your Mtdna tested which will show your mother's line, your mother-her mother-her mother-her mother-and so on, obviously Mtdna won't of itself tell you any last names, but it is possible that Ydna can be used to connect you to people of either the same or different last names, and Mtdna can be used to prove a relationship through you mother, both will indicate areas that your ancestors passed through and where your earliest ancestors originated!.
