For searching for the bits of information that will get you started there are plenty!.

As a starting poiint definitely look at GENUKI!. This is the place to find out where you need to look for information!. It is organised based on areas and locations but it will tell you where to get free information for the area you're interested to and tell you who the local societies are!. A really wonderful resource with lots of helpful hints and tips!.
http://www!.genuki!.org!.uk/

Try Familysearch which has transcriptions from parish records and has the 1881 census free!. Always check the sources on this website though as sometimes they are files submitted by other researchers and so may not necessarily be accurate!.

There is also FreeCen which is a project trying to put together free census records for people to access!. There is still a lot of work to do and you need to check on the progress for the county you're interested in to see if there is any progress for those records and which ones they're working on!.

FreeReg is trying to bring together baptism, burial and marriage records together to be searched for free!. Again, not total coverage but worth taking a look at just in case!.

There is a free website you can use to get the reference numbers for birth, marriage and death certificates so you can order them from the General Record Office!. It will cost you to buy the certificates, but rather than using one of the many pay-per-view sites to look at the lists for just the reference number I recommend visiting FreeBMD first!. Much more work has gone into this site than FreeCen or FreeReg so it has much more information!.

Additionally, there is Cyndi's List which has lots and lots of links to other websites that might be able to help you!. You can look by category or by location!.

Best of luck with your research!Www@QuestionHome@Com

first of all TALK TO EVERY MEMBER OF YOUR FAM for names, dates, stories!. that is #1 and most important!. next step is to do ancestry!.com free trial - make sure to do the worldwide one - and you must do this after #1 or you will waste time off the 14 day trial while you talk to fam!. trust me this was my mistake!. also be sure to cancel your subscription b4 the 14 days are up (thats the way the trial works)!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

www!.ancestry!.com would be the best!. You can do a search and get a list of items they have on that person!. If you don't have a subscription you can't see the record!.

If you can get back to 1930 or further, you can find them on census records!.

You can try familysearch!.com, but if you are really serious about researching your family, it will cost you some where down the line!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
