An 'immediate' common ancestor would be sharing the same grandparents or great-grandparents!. A 'remote' one would be sharing the same grandparent several generations back; for instance going back 9 or 10 generations to find that person you have in common!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Close relatives are parents, siblings, grandparents usually meaning ones you had interaction with as a family unit!. Distant relatives would be your great great grandparents, your cousin 4 times removed, relations that are several generations away!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
