Question: Genetic background of people in Germany's Rhineland!?
A lot of my heritage comes from the Rhine valley in Germany!. How did civilization grow there!? I've heard it said that a lot of people with Germany ancestry have Viking (Scandinavian) heritage as well because they came into Germany!. This makes sense to me for North Sea port towns like Bremen, but what about those in the SW corner of Germany!?

Is it Viking, Roman, Celt, other!? Kind of a broad question, I know, but I'm wondering where my ancestors came from before settling in the Rhine river valley!. Thanks for answering!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Germans are mostly descendants from the Germanic tribes that settled there!. Of course the Germans will have a smattering of Celtic blood and in the Rhineland some blood from the Roman legions that settled in these parts (or very nearby)!. Besides that Germans will have some Slavic, Jewish, Hungarian, Hunnic etc blood by virtue of being in the middle of Europe and in the middle of various immigration waves!.

But for the most parts Germans (just like the Dutch, the Skandinavians etc!.) are of Germanic ancestry!. Tribes that settled near or in the Rhineland are the Chatti the Cherusi and later the Franks (Franconians)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
