Question: Surname meaning - UNICUME!?
I was wondering if anyone knew the meaning of the surname UNICUME!. I#ve looked online, but I can't seem to find anything!. It's very possible that it's a miss-spelling of another name, eg -

UNICOMB
UNICOMBE
UNICUM
UNACUME

Any help much appreciated, because the spelling I have doesn't seem to be recognised!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I'll bet it is UNICOMBE !
I believe it is basically a southern counties name, e!.g!. Sussex!. Hampshire!. But don't hold me to that :o)

Edit:
Just tried a search for BMDs on FreeBMD and it's quite rare but the name is, as I suspected, mainly in Sussex area, with only one or two elsewhere !Www@QuestionHome@Com

And don't forget a lot of the time our ancestors were illiterate!. So if they were to "sign" a marriage register for instance they wouldn't know that their name had been spelt wrong and would rely on the minister of the church to have written their name down correctly!. Plus of course you have ancestors moving to other areas of the UK where their accent may have been misunderstood!.

It is surprising just how many of mine were only able to make a cross sign (X), not a signature at all!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
