If you have non-red hair but also the recessive gene for red hair
AND
you marry (or have children with) someone that has the same
THEN
there is a 1 in 4 chance of having a red haired baby (each child it is 1:4 so you could have more than one)

IF (assuming you are heterozygous with recessive red hair),
you marry (or have children with) someone that has red hair
THEN
there is a 1 in 2 (50/50) chance of having a red haired baby!.

You are wrong when you say that it is in your genes because you have 4 cousins on both sides of your family with red hair!. It is ONLY in your genes if you actually got passed down the gene from your mom or dad!. In genetics, brown hair is usually dominant over red, but red is dominant over blond!. However, most people I have known actually had a mix!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.brownish red or strawberry blond!. It seems that when a person has a gene for red hair and a gene for another hair color, they often get a mixed hair color rather than one color!. Since your hair is brown and does not appear to have any red mixed in it, I believe it is not very likely you got the gene for red hair!. It is also possible that you do not carry 2 genes for brown, but maybe a gene for brown and a gene for blond!. If that is the case, you could possibly pass blond hair on to your child!. It just depends on what you got from your parents, and you do not say what hair color they have!.

The next thing to figure out is what is your husband's genetic makeup!. If both of his hair color genes are for red, you stand a chance your child will at least have a mixed hair color with red!. If he has a gene for red and a gene for another hair color, it is possible that your child may not have red hair!.

It is impossible to figure out without knowing what hair color each of your and his parents have!. The other option would be to have a DNA test and see what hair color genes you and your husband actually carry in order to figure out all the options!.

My youngest daughter is a redhead!. I'm assuming she gets that from my husband since he is a strawberry blond (plus when he doesn't shave, the stubble comes in red), and he has several redheads in his immediate family!. I don't have any redheads in my family!. My daughter has beautiful red hair and gets a lot of nice comments on it!. My older daughter has blond hair -- you would never even know they were sisters!. Are you sure you want a redhead!? I haven't met one yet that wasn't a pistol and mine is no exception! LOL!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
