Question: Why are people so proud to have a Scottish name!?
I just heard one of my neighbours saying "My Mother was a Campbell" Woop-dee-doo so are like 40 million other people in the world!. In fact it's about the most common Scottish name there is!. People seem to go crazy over it if their name is Scottish or Irish for that matter or it has Scottish or Irish ancestory!.

Why is this!?

Because people think that if their great-great-great parents were Scottish, it gives them a right to call themselves Scottish, even if they don't know a rat's *** about Scotland!.

As for your neighbor!.!.!.I don't know, it might be that, or he might be obsessed with Campbell's chicken noodle soup!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Actually, I am American and have been interested in genealogy about all my life!. Yes, I have some Scottish linage and love going to the Highland games and watching the competitions and hearing the music!.

There is some discussion of perhaps some sort of "genetic memory" carried in people's DNA, not proven or unproven, that I know of, but discussion!. That might account for the enthusiasm people have when they learn of their ancestry!.

Many with Scottish ancestry are in other lands because they were deported and exiled from their homes for political reasons -- fighting against the English, for instance!. Perhaps it was our forefathers longing for "home" that has been passed down either verbally or through "genetic memory!."

However, people have different interests!. You don't understand the appeal of discovering your heritage, but other people might not understand things that interest/appeal to you!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Interesting question!. I am of Italian descent, and I don't brag about it at all!. I think it possibly might have to due with the fact that Scotland and Ireland once had Kings, Queens and royalty in their heritage and that these people are descendants of this!. This is a trait that Italian heritage never had in it's past, if it did, I might be the one saying: 'I was a so-and-so'Www@QuestionHome@Com
