Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
When not Asian in origin, this surname most often comes from an Old English (=Anglo-Saxon) word “leah” which meant “glade, clearing in a wood, field, pasture”!. So it meant originally someone who lived in such a place!. It is also spelt Lea, Leigh, Legh, Lay, and a few other ways as well!.

Less often it can be a worn-down form of an Irish surname “O’Lea”

Thus, given that a large proportion of the population of Scotland is of Anglo-Saxon origin, this name could come from England, Scotland or Ireland!. You’d have to research the genealogy of the person to know which it was in any given case!.
