No, There are many websites in genealogy!. Using your surname alone is really not all that good!.

Actually, you have to be very careful about taking as absolute fact everything you see in family trees on ANY website, free or not free!. The info is subscriber submitted and mostly not documented or poorly documented!. You will see different info on the same people from different subscribers!. Then you will see repeatedly the same info from different subscribers on the same people but that is no guarantee it is correct!. A lot of people copy without verifying!.

Most people in Europe did not have surnames until the last millennium!. In England, for instance, most had one by the end of the 14th century!. They were based on a)being the son of someone b)their occupation c) where they lived d)some characteristic about them!. When they got through it wasn't impossible for legitimate sons of the same man to have a different surname and still each could have shared their surname with others with whom they were not related!. Now some will say we are all related if you go back far enough!. However, the root person of your surname will not always be the same as the root person of someone else with your surname!. So surnames alone are not sufficient!. also, you have to realize your surname is only a very very small part of your ancestry!.

The number of people you descend from pyramids as you go back!. If you get back to your 6xgreat grandparents, barring any duplicates, you are directly descended from 510 individuals!. Get back to your 7xgreat grandparents it jumps to 1020 individuals!. Probably most all of those individuals had different surnames if they had one at all!.

I said "barring any duplicate!." The further you go back you will probably find cousins of varying degree that married in your family tree!.

If you really want to research your family tree, come back with another question asking how to go about it and let me tell you there are lots of great people on this board that can give you some wonderful tips and advice!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

Many people have put their research results onto web sites; just try googling your surname followed by the word family and a place, e!.g!. "Jones family - London" and see if anything comes up!. If it's an unusual name you might strike lucky and find that a cousin has done the work already!.
There is a guy in Bristol who has published all his findings on a one-name study back to the 1500's and I'm on his Tree!.
Alternatively, have you thought of signing up to "Genes Reunited" - many people find links on there!.
County Family History Societies are also useful!.
I belong to the Bristol & Avon Family History Society and if I go into their web site, there is a section listed called "Members Interests"!. I can click on that, then on the name in which I am interested and it will bring up all the people researching that particular name in Bristol!.
Most of the members have e-mail addresses and are happy to share their findings with another possible cousin!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

There is a great write up at About!.com entitled, 100 Ways to Research Your Family Tree for Free (Alternatives to Pay-For-Use Genealogy Sites on the Internet) by Kimberly Powell that just might be helpful to you:
