I tried to find him on the 1881 census on the Familysearch website but to no avail!. As has already been previously mentioned the census is not a perfect document with transcription errors etc!. I have seen pages where the enumerator (the person conducting the census) used ditto marks to save time when transcribing the same names/places of birth but accidentally goes too far so the family below have incorrect information!. also you must remember back then you were not sent a form in the post to fill in, someone came round to ask you questions and fill in the form for you!. They had to go by what people said and if your ancestor managed to not be around at the time or whoever he was staying with gave the wrong name then he won't be listed as you'd expect!.

In very rare cases people gave false names on the census!. I have an ancestor who did this!. He called himself Jeremiah Smith on his marriage certificate, on his son's birth certificate and even in the church registers at the baptism of all his children!. In the census he calls himself Joseph Baxter!. We only worked it out because the village they loved in was very small, Baxter was not a name that cropped up in the baptism records of that period and there was a family story about Jeremiah's son's nickname being Stiffy Baxter!.

Although you can't find Ernest at the moment, it might be worth trying to find his parents on the census returns!. The marriage certificate should have his father's name on it and if you get his birth certificate it will give you his parents names!. If you can then get their marriage certificate you can start looking for them and eventually you might find Ernest by chance!.

I did find the reference for a birth certificate for Ernest Jaynes in Westbury, a district in Gloucestershire!.
Births Jun 1859 (Jun refers to the June Quarter which covers April to June of a given year)
Jaynes, Ernest Westbury 6a 204
The last bit refers to the Volume number and page number in the big books of birth registrations held in London!. With this references you can apply for a copy of the birth certificate from the General Register Office (GRO) for the standard rate (they charge more if they have to search for the reference number on top of issuing the document)!. The GRO website is at http://www!.gro!.gov!.uk/ and will explain more about applying for this!.

Once you know exactly where Ernest was born it might be worth contacting the local family history there for more assistance!.

Hope that helps you get further back!. Good luck!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Some of my ancestors who came over from Ireland are on some censuses and not on others, maybe due to ignorance either on their behalf or the census takers!. I was given some advice once, everyone generates a lot of paperwork, keep searching and you will find what you are seekingWww@QuestionHome@Com

This question was before and received a lot of effort, but not a successful outcome!. UNLESS there is some additional information since then I don't think anyone can do anything!.

Did he have any children that you have details of (where or when)!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

I have looked on Ancestry co uk and found the record for Ernest Janes in 1901 census, where he is aged 41 - a house painter and married to Agnes (30) with a son Edward (13!?)!.

His birth record is given as Apr-June 1859 at Westbury on Severn, Glos - Volume 6a Page 204!. You could perhaps order a copy of his brith certificate to find out who his parents were and where they were living!.
His death is registered in 1903 (July - Sept) at age 44 in Cardiff!. Volume 11a Page 175!.

However like you, I can find no details of him in the other Census's which could be due to the fact that his name is mis-spelt, that he was visiting relatives/friends and they did not record him!.

Unfortunately the Census is not very reliable in this respect!.

As you have his address in Cardiff (Frederick Street) in 1901 and which Parish, maybe there are some Parish records that would help you!. Try the Churches in that area!.

Good luck though!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

When searching ancestry in 1891 I only found a few entries for Wales!.
In 1871 the Wales census is listed separately than the England census on ancestry!.
These could be a few reasons for not finding him, depending on the ancestry database you are searching, not to mention there are several ways to spell his first and last names!.
