UK answer!.
If you are asking this from the UK you can now change your name by deed poll at the register office where the birth was registered, this way you don't need a solicitor so it is cheaper as well, It was ￡40:00 when I enquired 18 months ago!.

You can change your name by deed (=doing) & poll (= You)!.
It'll cost you a few quid!. Ask you local council!.

But you don't need to! You can call yourself by whatever name you like if you don't use it for illegal activities!.

Do married women change their name by DP!? They just call themselves by another name!.
