Only by researching it!. There are a lot of websites with family trees!. The only way any of your family will be in it if some family member has done the family tree and submitted it to the website!. also, you cannot take as absolute fact everything you see in family trees in ANY website, free or not free!. The info is subscriber submitted (by folks like you and me)!. Most is not documented or poorly documented!. You will see different info on the same people from different subscribers!. Then you will see repeatedly the same info on the same people from different subscribers but that is no guarantee at all it is correct!. A lot of people copy without verifying!. also don't expect to find living people in the family trees!. That is considered an invasion of privacy and can lead to identity theft!.

I like Ancestry!.Com best for the amount of records on line!. They have all the U!.S!. censuses through 1930!.!. The 1940 and later are not available to the public yet!. They have immigration records and military records!. They also have indexes to vital records of many states!.

Now, no way are all records online but you have a better chance with Ancestry!.Com!.

If you find it too pricey, your public library might have a subscription to it you can use!.

Edit: I might add that your teacher might have given an impossible assignment for some!. I know I have American Indian background and when they came and why no way can I be sure!. Genealogy DNA suggest that they crossed an ice bridge from East Asia many years ago!. I also had them at the first permanent English settlement in America, Jamestown Virginia!. A lot of people might have ancestors back that far and don't know it and it might take them several years to find out through research!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Start with what your family knows as for certain (names, birth dates and places, marriage dates and place, death dates and places!. Get all the siblings too where you know you have the right family!. Go back as far as you can go!. Then check out the following websites for HINTS!. Don't take any of it as right!. Do your own research to PROVE it right or wrong!. I have inadvertently put the wrong John to the right father!. There were 2 sons named John but when the 1st John died as a baby they named the next son born John too!. I put all th children of the 2nd John for the 1st John!. Confusing, HUH!? So get it right!.
