It is when you and a cousin are not in the same generation from your common ancestor!. Example: Let's say Rose is your great-grandmother and is Larry's great-grandmother!. You and Larry would be second cousins because you are in the same generation from Rose!. Now let's say Larry has a child named Joe!. So, Rose is your great-grandmother but is Joe's great-great-grandmother!. That would make Joe your 2nd cousin once removed!. The cousin number (first cousin, second cousin, etc) is determined by what generation the person who is closest to the common ancestor falls, and the "removed" is by how many more generations the other person is from that ancestor than you are!. In my example, you fall in the 2nd cousin generation of the ancestor that you and Joe have in common, so you are 2nd cousins, but Joe is one more generation off from that ancestor than you are, so he is once more removed than you!. He is your 2nd cousin once removed!. Your child and Joe would be equal distance from the common ancestor!. They would both be great-great-grandchildren of Rose, so they would be 3rd cousins to each other!. Clear as mud I'm sure, but it is a concept that is hard to explain but once you get it, then it makes perfect sense and is easy to figure out!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
