Question: How can I find out where my great-grandparents are buried!?
My mom and my aunt would like to visit the graves of my great-grandparents, but it has been a very long time since they've been there!. They wanted me to look on the computer to see if I could find out, but I haven't had any luck!.

Is there any way I can find out (preferably for free or minimal cost) where they are buried!? They are either in Floyd or Pike county of Kentucky!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Finding dead people is like fly fishing!. You have to "cast" a number of times, and even then you sometimes don't catch anything!.

You could try
http://www!.findagrave!.com

The US Gen Web sites for Floyd and Pike counties may have lists of who is where!. You can get to both via the state site:
http://www!.kygenweb!.net/counties/index!.h!.!.!.

You might be able to find them in Google by using quotation marks ("), nor (')!. Try both forms of the name, plus a word

"John Smith" cemetery
"Smith, John" cemetery

note that the comma isn't necessary and the word "cemetery" has to be outside the quotation marks!. If thei rlast names are common you could add

"John Smith" cemetery (Pike OR Floyd)

note that "OR" has to be all caps, and the parenthesis are important!. (you could do the one above in two searches:

"John Smith" cemetery Pike
"John Smith" cemetery Floyd

Try this link:
http://www!.findagrave!.com/cgi-bin/fg!.cgi!.!.!.
Enter the name you're looking for and the other info and see what happens!. Even if you don't get a hit on the original search, you can go to "Cemetery Lookup" on the left hand side of the page and do a cemetery search by county!. The link to the county lookup is in the first paragraph on the page, above the NAME search!.

I've had very good luck finding graves for my relatives through the county search when it first appeared they weren't listed with the site!. It's a little tedious to have to search cemetery by cemetery, but it's usually worth it!. Sometimes the headstones have initials instead of names or they have nick names or something that will throw off the search on the first page of this site!. A lot of the individual cemetery pages also have maps to make the cemetery easier to find!. Good luck!Www@QuestionHome@Com

There ARE several sites that have burials listed!.

One is www!.usgenweb!.org, go to Kentucky and look in Floyd, then Pike for their cemetery listings with surveys of who is buried there!.

Another way is to look in the usgenweb Cemetery Project Page (take projects from the first page)!. This will also have lists of cemeteries and the people buried there!.

The next two are also great sites:

If all else fails, call the courthouses of these two counties and see if they will look for the death certificate and tell you which cemetery he is buried at!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

They don't list people buried in graveyards!. But you can find death certificates online!.!.!.I just don't know of any free sites!. My mom has a subscription to one of the sites, email me and I will ask if she can look it up!. kooky_bat@yahoo!.com !. They are most likely buried in the same city they died in!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

One way to start is to find the obituary and death certificates!. That helps narrow things down and sometimes if there is a death notice the burial place is named!. Catholics and others sometimes had prayer cards with the info printed on the back that also make good sources!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I don't know if this will help, but there is a database of grave sites from all over the country!. It is free!. People have gone in and taken pictures of grave markers & posted them!. This site will give you social security record of where and when they died & if available, it will tell you where they are burried!.

I'd check the local newspaper covering those counties and see if the obituary is available!. If so, the burial location is usually in it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
