What sort of name is Jabez?

Question: What sort of name is Jabez!?

I am doing my boyfriend's family tree and have found a Jabez Single on the 1841 census in Whitechapel (not born in the county) aged 35 but then I cant find him anywhere else!. In the 1841 census he also has a son aged 7 called Jabez and I cant find him in later census returns either!.

I have done a bit of searching for your Jabez - very difficult man to find !

But I have found his marriage and I think I have a census for him, as well as some info on his wife Susannah!.

also have found some of the children!.

EDIT : Ive found father and son on another census as well!.

In the I Book of Chronicles Jabez is a well-respected man, an ancestor in the lineage of the kings tribe of Judah whose prayer to God for blessing was answered (1 Chronicles 4:9-10)!. Moreover the author paused to give Jabez a place of honour in the long list of Kings and lineage!.

"And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, 'Oh that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!' So God granted him what he requested!." (NKJV)

The name Jabez sounds like the Hebrew word for pain, and was given to him because of the pain his mother suffered while bearing him!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I have a Jabez in my family tree, he came from Cornwall and I have never come across another one!. You could try looking on www!.familysearch!.org!.
