Question: O'Brien name-- descended from the king!?
My last name is O'Brien, which means descendent of Brian, or 11th-century king Brian Boru!. I am not adopted, and know of several generations back with the name O'Brien, so can I know for (99%) certain that I am a direct descendent of the king!?
It is likely, or is there no real way to know!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

O'Brien means descendant of Brian!. If the Brian that you are descended from was Brian Boru, yes you are!. You have to understand there was more than one Brian with descendants!. However, Brian Boru has many descendants living today!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Sorry! NOT very likely!. There are thousands of O'Brian's or O'Brien's, or O'Bryn's!. Spellings change over time due to mis spelling by people, without there really being any difference in families!. They probably all started as one spelling!. but if you feel like the decendant of a King, why not be the decendant of a king!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Not necessarily descended from a king!. In Irish it means--
"Young descendant of the strong, virtuous one"!.
That's pretty strong stuff right there-- a lot better than a very remote thousand year old link!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
