Question: Anyone here good at reading census records!?
I can't make out the writing on a census record from 1901!.

This is it:
http://www!.mediafire!.com/imageview!.php!?q!.!.!.

Its the Clark family living at 3 York Terrace!.

What I can't make out is the occupations fields, as a lot of it has marks on it, obscuring the writing!.
Any help with deciphering this would be much appreciated!

Thanks!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I reckon Horace is a Turf Correspondent!. This ties in with the brother who is a News Agent and the Stbleboy (racing)!. Horace would have reported on the horse races at the nearby Newmarket Races, possibly sending details of the races to London, possibly even by telephone or perhaps telegraph at this time!Www@QuestionHome@Com

3,York Terrace!.
1!.Jane Clarke-widow & head of household
2!.Albert Clarke-son!. newsagent (own account- at home) this means he works for himself!.Possibly its a large house with a newsagents shop at the bottom!.
3!.Horace Clarke-son!. Turf Accountant!?
4!.Charles Morton!.Boarder!. Stable groom & possibly a jockey!.(racing)
5!.Olive Munns-general servant & domestic!.
Very difficult to decipher Horace Clarke's employment but I'm guessing turf accountant & that he would also be working for himself!.hope this helps!.

I've blown it up and it looks like Albert was a News Agent and Horace was a 'Turf Correspondent'!.

Charles Morton was a Stable Groom (Racing) and Olive Munns a General Servant (Domestic)!.

Think about it, this area is quite close to Newmarket so the racing connection seems appropriate!.

Hope this helps!.

I have viewed the image with irfanview, paint, windows etc, but nothing seems to enlarge the image without it blurring!.

News Agent!.

Turf Correspond !?!? - there is another word written above, but I can't make it out, I'd say he was a Turf Correspondent

Stable Hand Racing- with Groom written above it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

For Albert Clarke, it did say he was a news agent and that he owned the account and worked from home!.
Mother Jane was 48, widowed and had no occupation listed!.
As for brother Horace, the first word looked like TURF, and since you said they lived a mile from a race track, this could be possible!. Possibly he repaired the track after the races!?!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Occupants of 3 York Terrace:
Jane Clarke, head, widow
Albert -do-, son, news agent
Horace -do-, son, turf correspondent
Charles Morton, boarder, stablehand (racing) / (ins!. above) groom
Olive Munns, servant, general servant (domestic)Www@QuestionHome@Com

I would say News Agent as well!. The only other possibility given the Newmarket "horsey" connection is "Mews Agent", but I'd say that is definately an "N" not an "M"!. The second one looks like Turf Correspondant clearly a racing-based occupation, the next Stableyard boy (racing) and the last General Servant (Domestic)!.

News Agent probably does not mean what we think it does today - selling newspapers - it probably means he worked as a newspaper correspondant (probably for the sports pages) and passed the racing results and stories on to the local and national press - more what we would term as a freelance reporter, hence he probably would have been self-employed and worked from home!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
