It's traditional because ours is a patriarchal society!. In the past, women were considered property, first of their parents and later their husband!. The surname identified to whom they belonged!. Children were property of their father as well and the surname was the only way of showing legitimacy, that the kid had a legal father!. Traditions change and much as women frequently now keep their maiden names after marriage, children are sometimes given the mother's surname or a combination of both parent's names as they do in many Spanish-speaking cultures!!!!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The taking of the last name is for the purpose of identication!. It shows the family line and thus whose child belongs to whom!. Ours is a Patriarchal society so the name passes through the ine of the Fathers!. In matriarcal societies it passes though the Mother's line!. It is a system used for identicfication, but today many people questioning the rights of individuals make more of the system than it warrants!. This results in hyphenated names like Smith-Jones!. It can also result in a man having son bearing his wife's name!. These are not moral problems, but they create confusion!. Woman typically keep their "maiden" or unmarried names for business purposes!. The name gives recognition so that people seeking to do business can find the now married woman!. Most of the name business is based on money!. Generally the name with the most money or the name that will generate it is the one the people want to keep hence keeping the maiden name, adopting the wife's name or the hyphenated name!.
