The main site with census records is ancestry!.com, and if you are serious about finding ancestry, it is well worth it!. You almost cannot do research without the census!. Usually, you can find it at a local library for free, but you have to spend the time/ money to get there!. One thing that will help you a lot, is to use the date(s) of children, to better estimate when he lived or how old he might have been!. If he had a child born in 1922, for example!.!. it is normal to find the family in the 1930 census, which can be used to build back!. Donald Vanslooten is shown in the social security death index, and died in SD!. His birth is 1913!. I'd guess this is one of the children, and the death is Perkins county!. also in the social security death index, 45 of them have cards issued in Michigan, and yes, some of these seem to connect to Holland (as place of death)!. You may also want to go through the search for Vanslooten at www!.rootsweb!.com!. I find one family headed by Volkert Vanslooten, who had a child born in Holland, Mich in 1882!. Volkert may/ may not be the same as Fred Vanslooten, who is in the 1880 census with his wife and daughter!. According to this!.!. Fred, his wife and daughter (who is 14) all were born in Holland (country, not the town)!. So the immigration is between 1866 to 1880!. edit yay for Joyce!. This not only gives a date of birth, but proves he was still living in the 1940s!.
