If the grave is in the UK and the person died only 40 years ago, it may well be located in a municipal cemetery, run by and maintained by the local council!. Most local authorities hold records of burials in their cemeteries, so these can be searched and the grave located!. If you know where the person was living when he died, try a google search for the location + local council, then have a look on the council's site to find the cemeteries department!.

The special collections / local history room of the county library may have cemetery listings!.

If all else fails, you'll have to buy a copy of his death certificate from the county records office!. It, it turn, will say where the mortal remains were buried!.
