Do the research!. If you find documents/ records (which is how to do solid genealogy), then it isn't a question of who to "believe", since all can be correct to a point, or they can just be confusing you!. Which they are!.
NY means nothing, except to tell you that NY is going to be where you will find some records!.
Start with the basics!.!. your birth certificate is the first document that you work with!. That verifies who your own parents are!. Next, your parents records will verify the names of their parents!. You won't find live persons on the internet!.!. so, starting out, you have to work with asking for the records within the family!. You have 4 grandparents!.!. EACH will have parents, making it 8 persons!. AS you are going along, those records will give you not only the names, but dates and places!. Same for death certificates (if family does not have those, they can be ordered, but are not free)!.
Interviewing/ asking family is one way to get direction!. In order to sort out the specific FACTS, you need to have the actual records!. Once you get back maybe 100 yrs, you can start finding more info on the internet!.
