Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: My best advice is to start with yourself!. Pull out a copy of your birth certificate, and ask your parents to show you theirs!. You will find out where they were born and who your grandparents were!. Next, look for copies of your grandparents' birth or death certificates!. You will find a lot of information here!. Do this for each generation of your relatives!. Once you find out where they were born, you might want to visit those areas and check out the town/city halls and churches!. Town/city halls and churches are a treasure trove for people wishing to find out more about their family because they hold so many records!. also, ask your parents, aunts and uncles about your grandparents!. If your grandparents are still alive, talk to them! They have great stories to tell and have amazing wisdom!. Ask them if they have any special family heirlooms and about the stories behind them!. Another thing you might want to inquire about- family Bibles!. Sometimes, really old Bibles have family information in them and will list the names of the family members who have lived in the US, starting with the first generation of American residents going right down to the last!. For example, my paternal great-grandfather's mother gave him a Bible that listed all of the generations of Aldriches that have lived here, beginnning with the first and ending with him and my great-grandmother!. Talk to your living relatives before it is too late!. You won't find living people on genealogy sites!. You'll have to get back to people living in 1930 or so by talking to relatives, looking up obituaries and so forth!. Finally, not everything you read on the internet is true!.
