In China, thousands of years ago!.

In other countries, some so primitive that they have knives on their table when they eat, instead of leaving them in the kitchen where they belong, sometime in the middle ages, when saying "John" wasn't enough to identify someone!.

People added "Paul's son" (Paulson, Johnson, Simons)
or "with the strong arm" (Armstrong, Little, Brown)
or "The baker" (Baker, Cook, Carpenter, Miller, Fletcher)
