It means, "Of the Duke" or "From the Duke!." This could mean that your ancestor was a Duke's son, born out of wedlock, like, in England Fitzroy was the illegitimate son of a King(fils de Roi!.)
More likely he would have been a servant or employee in the household of a Duke!. I'm not an expert though so keep researching! It's an interesting name!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It looks German!. Graf would be graaf in Dutch!. I would go with your guess to start!. Where did you get that word!? Is it a title or geographic!? What's the context!?

I would try posting on German Answers!. You could use Babel Vista to translate or just write it in English!. Many learn English in school and speak it quite well!.
