Removed is when you go up or down a generation!.

Your parents' 3rd cousin = your 3rd C once removed (3C1R)

Your grandparents' third cousins = your 3C2R
Your 1st great grandparents' third cousins = your 3C3R
Your 2nd GGPs' third cousins = your 3C4R
Your 3rd GGPs' third cousins = your 3C5R

It goes the other way, too; your third cousins' children are your 3C1R, and so on!. It is unlikely you have any 3C with 3rd great grandchildren!.

Second cousins are children of first cousins, 3C are children of 2C and so on!.

Unless you are one of those wise, witty, warm, well-read and devilishly handsome people we call genealogists, you will probably not know anyone who is further out than second cousin or twice removed!.

I know some people who are president John Adam's half first cousin 6 times removed, but they didn't work out the relationship, I did!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

actually, 'removed' means 'offset'!.

The easiest example is to think of one of your first cousins, someone you share a grandparent with!. If you have a child, that child is still said to be a first cousin of that person, but you add 'once removed'!. The same if that person has a child!. That child is your first cousin, once removed!.

The children themselves are second cousins to each other!.

A third cousin to you, 5 times removed, means, then!.!.!.that you have a third cousin who has a great great great great grandchild!. That 'gggggrandchild' is the one who is your 3rd cousin, 5 times removed!. Sorry if I don't have the exact number of g's, but I'm sure you get the idea!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The removed is from a common ancestor, IE your cousins share a grandparent, there children would be one step removed from that common ancestor (once removed), there children would be two steps removed from that ancestor (twice removed)
